About the 23rd National Conference for Senior Investigating Officers

“Navigating the Layers of Investigative Leadership Within Complex Crime Investigations”

This conference will explore the dynamic relationship within investigative leadership and the collective responsibility for managing complex, high-profile and high-risk investigations.

Through operational case studies, practitioner insight and subject matter expert inputs, delegates will examine how Senior Investigating Officers (SIO), Strategic Investigators (PIP4) and Strategic Commanders work together to navigate the competing demands of investigative priorities, family liaison, operational risk, and public confidence.

The programme will consider the practical realities of leading major investigations, including decision-making under pressure, investigative governance, resource prioritisation, critical incident management, managing investigative risk, and maintaining investigative momentum over prolonged enquiries.

It will also explore how strategic leadership can create the conditions for investigative success by providing effective oversight, challenge, assurance and organisational support, while preserving the operational independence of the SIO.

As major crime investigations continue to increase in complexity, the ability to align leadership across every level of command has never been more important. This conference provides an opportunity for Senior Investigating Officers and Senior Investigators (PIP4) to reflect on current practice, share lessons from complex investigations, and examine how effective leadership across the investigative command structure enhances decision-making, strengthens accountability and ultimately improves investigative outcomes for victims, families and communities.
