Operation Pavecrest was the long running investigation into the 2011 disappearance of Dariusz Michalowski. His body remained undiscovered for many years whilst the enquiry continued. The case involved international elements, multiple experts, covert tactics and the use of SOCPA legislation to finally bring his killers to justice a decade later.

Based on research which aimed to identify characteristics, commonalities, vulnerabilities, and risk factors in homicide events involving missing people, drawing on case study examples this presentation will focus on the key findings, and risk factors pertinent to these investigations.

This presentation details the reinvestigation into the murder of Emma Caldwell. She was reported as a missing person on April 10th, 2005, with her last confirmed sighting being on April 5th. Emma’s body was discovered one month later in remote woodland. The case was successfully prosecuted in 2024.

This session presents key findings from the NCVPP's Domestic Homicide Project. This includes the results from the Project's 4th annual report alongside recommendations relevant for policing. This presentation focuses on the response to, and investigation of, unexpected deaths, including suspected victim suicides following domestic abuse.

Operation Drift Mike relates to significant disorder at the Holiday Inn in Rotherham in August 2024 that resulted in injuries to over 60 officers and approximately £4,000,000 of property damage.
The presentation will describe how the investigation was conducted under intense political pressure, and against the threat of further disorder.

In May 2024 Amie Gray and Leanne Miles were sitting on Bournemouth beach when they were stabbed. Amie tragically died of her injuries. The suspect had meticulously planned the attack and his escape. The presentation will explore the challenges faced by the SIO and PIP 4 in a high-profile cold start murder investigation.

Europol’s Operational Taskforce GRIMM targets initiators and recruiters who exploit the internet to recruit persons (often minors) for violent attacks. By combining intelligence, operations, awareness, and prevention, OTF GRIMM intends to disrupt criminal networks early, preventing bombings, killings, and other acts of violence across Europe.

Proof of concept case study outlining the use of violence as a service methodology (customer, recruiter, enabler, perpetrator) to commit serious criminality in furtherance of The Foxtrot Network here in the UK. Identified as an emerging threat that if allowed to take hold, would quickly overwhelm UK law enforcement. Steps to dismantle rely on cross agency collaboration.

This presentation deals with the pressure placed on the SIO in an intensive and high-profile investigation which has continued media coverage over two years after the murder, exploring the trade-off between working with a PIP4 and the Borough Commander with the longer-term implications. It will also explore challenging but critical decision making around mental health, capacity and loss of control which impacted the expert psychiatric evidence resulting in the Guilty verdict.

The child victim, vulnerable by age and lifelong disability, was grossly neglected by her parents during Covid lockdown resulting in death. Before lockdown she enjoyed mainstream school. Investigation in partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service and leading experts secured convictions for Gross Negligence Manslaughter totalling 18 years.
