The Police National Database provides a critical role in keeping people safe, providing unique access to intelligence and information from fifty-five law enforcement agencies and two hundred and fifty source systems.

Effective use of the PND enables intelligence led prevention, early intervention, and the relentless pursuit of offenders to reduce harm.

PND continually evolves, providing our front-line services with improved functionality.  3.1 million searches were completed in the first quarter of 2023, with the use of facial searching continuing to grow.  In October 2021, 2830, facial searches were completed. In April 2023 users completed 11325 facial searches, a growth of 866% from October 21 to April 23.  This demonstrates the critical role PND provides to victims, law enforcement and the intelligence community.

The NPCC PND lead, Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman, on behalf of UK policing and law enforcement works with CGI to continuously improve the efficiency and capability of the PND.

Current focus is to,

  • Promote the importance of data quality and intelligence sharing to enable effective and informed decision making.
  • Lead and implement effective change to improve user experience and the capabilities of PND.
  • Increase effective usage of PND, the sharing of learning and innovative ways of working.
  • Promote PND capabilities and operational benefits within its functionality, including the automation of intelligence searches and specific business area support.
  • Promote access and use of PND across areas of sensitive and non-sensitive intelligence.
  • Promote the benefits of the Organised Crime Group mapping and the County Lines and Modern Slavery/Human Trafficking data, which is routinely entered and mapped in PND.

There is a Knowledge Hub, PND page and an evolving PND microsite available to all police staff at http://elearning.pnd.pnn.police.uk/microsite. This microsite is an access point for PND information, updates, training materials, latest news and support to help those getting to know or are needing to know more about PND. Users are encouraged to use and access these platforms to learn what PND can offer to the law enforcement, and intelligence communities. Support is also provided by the national PND team at pndspoccommunity@northwales.police.uk.
