The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is the independent statutory body responsible for reviewing potential miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Where appropriate, we can refer cases back to the relevant appellate court.
Although we are independent of both the prosecution and the defence, the effectiveness of our work depends on strong relationships with police and other law enforcement agencies. We have a range of statutory powers, including the ability to require a Chief Constable to preserve and provide material gathered during an investigation. We can also request the appointment of a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) to carry out enquiries on our behalf, typically where a criminal offence may be suspected.
We are keen to discuss how our role may interact with your organisation and how we can work together more effectively. We are equally interested in exploring how we can support organisational learning and help improve future investigations by sharing lessons identified through our case reviews.
Please come and visit us at our stand during the conference.
