The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is the official independent statutory body which carries out investigations into potential miscarriages of justice and can refer cases back to the relevant Appeal Court.
Although we are independent of both prosecution and defence, the success of our work depends on effective relationships with police/ law enforcement agencies. We have a number of powers including requiring a Chief Constable to preserve and produce all material gathered during an investigation, as well as a power to request the appointment of an SIO to carry out enquiries on our behalf usually when a criminal offence maybe suspected.
